From the first moment someone gazed across our expansive horizons and asked, “What if?”, the spirit of innovation has been central to our identity. Our town has grown through generations of visionaries who embraced challenges with tenacity and transformed the vast prairies into a vibrant community.

Our journey began long before McCook was officially recognized as a city in 1882. Indigenous people first recognized the land’s potential, thriving on its bounty and setting the stage for future generations. Those who followed were drawn to the wide-open spaces and the promise they held, building a town through hard work, innovation, and a shared sense of possibility. Today, we are honored to carry forward their legacy, embracing the spirit of creativity and perseverance that has always defined McCook.
Although rural America is often overlooked, McCook stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. When the idea of returning the Great Plains to grasslands emerged in 1987, suggesting that our region was no longer viable, we responded not with defeat but with determination.

The Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival, established in 1997, is a celebration of our rich history and culture, affirming our belief that a community’s greatest treasure is the evolving narrative of its people. This festival has grown into a cherished tradition, now in its 28th year, showcasing the enduring power of storytelling and community.
