Native to the Great Plains, millions of bison once roamed these prairies, where indigenous peoples, including the Pawnee, sustainably hunted and cultivated crops like corn, beans, and squash. The bison, now recognized as America’s national mammal, holds a deep connection to this land’s history.
The Milky Way, the galaxy that houses our solar system, is so vast that even at the speed of light, it would take 25,000 years to reach its center. Our rural location, blessed with dark skies, offers us a magnificent view of this cosmic wonder.
In the McCook Mural (right), the celestial bison symbolizes the rich history and ancestry of this region, honoring those who lived in Southwest Nebraska long before us. It also serves as a reminder of our awe-inspiring connection to the universe above.
